The black shark minnow is a cyprinid and we think one of the most beautiful members of the carp family in Asia. Although the name gives away its colour, its appearance in natural light shows off a deep purple colouration on the edge of each of its scales.
It is an extremely territorial fish amongst its own species so cannot be targeted as part of a shoal for example. Our black shark minnow are typically caught around 3m from the bank in about 8-12ft of water and put up a great fight for their size, especially on our light tackle rods. Both ledgering and float tactics work well and they will eat pretty much everything including sweetcorn, worms, bread and freshwater snails and shrimp presented with regular balls of lam.
