The soldier river barb is another of our cyprinid species but one which is not commonly seen in fisheries in Thailand. In the wild it inhabits large rivers feeding on vegetation and algae with mature specimens also consuming small crustaceans and fish. It has a bright silvery/gold colouration to its scales and can be identified by four distinct barbels on its mouth.
Our soldier river barb can be caught in a number of ways and are good fighters on light tackle so a waggler set up or light ledger outfit fished in about 1-2m of water with corn, poly balls or bread for bait normally yields the best results. These fish need to be handled carefully in the net as they are prone to scales being lifted and removed.
